As I travel around to various jobs I try to keep a camera at hand. Some of these photo essays are elsewhere on the site - under the Dome and London Eye - others will appear here.

Murray's
Barbeque

While I was working in May 1999 for SoftAd Inc in Detroit I was invited to a BBQ at Murray's Place. Murray is mad on classic cars and I took a few photos...
By the way, in the evening we watched drive-in movies being projected onto a sheet tacked on the side of the house using the office's SVGA projector!

S Club 7
One Sunday while working at Capital Radio the editorial team were going to cover the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party at the London Arena and asked me to supply someone from my department to provide technical cover. Deciding that it could be fun (and not wanting to ask one of them to give up a Sunday when they were already giving their all for the project) I went along myself! Although these aren't the most exciting photos around they give a little of the flavour of the event backstage.

Early
Computers

The single-console version with large screen that was the DE700 series

I'm starting to build an archive of photographs showing equipment and software I've used over the years...
First up are a screen-shot of the Sperry/Unisys 'Mapper' fourth-generation language and a picture of one the early 'personal' computers; the desk-sized Olivetti DE730. The object in the lower left corner by the way is the original Floppy Disk Drive in 8-inch form! In the big picture beliw you will see an early Line Printer; the young lady is holding the inked ribbon in a cartridge!.
Mapper version 27 I believe

Again a Sperry Univac product but I'm not sure of the model number.

Close up of disk drives
A close-up on the disk drives at the back of the computer room. These were (arguably) the forerunner of the modern floppy, Zip, Jaz and LS120 disks as they were removable. You can see two multi-platter disks in their plastic hoods sitting on top of the drives.

August 11
1999

Like many people in the UK I saw something of the 1999 total lunar eclipse of the sun.

Although I stayed in London we still had a 96% (or so!) coverage of the sun by the moon so it was still an amazing experience, as I hope these photos show.

Question
Time

BBC's Question Time television program has always been a part of my regular viewing. Shortly after I had attended a broadcast of its Radio 4 counterpart - Any Questions - I visited Television Centre for a recording of QT.
Guests that night were Yasmin Alibhai Brown, Rt Hon Geoff Hoon MP, Rt Hon Charles Kennedy MP and Rt Hon Oliver Letwin MP. In the chair, as usual, was David Dimbleby. I'm in the purple!
